Hannah Yohannes is an award-winning Eritrean director and producer, celebrated for her emotionally layered and culturally rich storytelling. Her critically-acclaimed short film Home Away was featured on Issa Rae’s Short Film Sundays and earned her the Shaw Media Fearless Female Directors Award.
She recently co-directed the bold comedic short Hiding At A Funeral with the phenomenal Mona Hersi, which won Best Short Film by a Female Filmmaker at the Canada Black Screen Awards, and Best Canadian Short Film at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (T.I.N.F.F.). The film’s sharp wit and heartfelt layers continue to resonate with global audiences.
Hannah is currently developing her highly anticipated series Mutuals, a Toronto-rooted narrative exploring Black masculinity, legacy, and healing through a bold, intimate lens.
She also served as a Senior Protocol Producer on Big Brother Canada’s historic ninth season—a cultural milestone that featured the show's first Black winner, LGBTQIA+ runner-up, and Indigenous finalist, and was recognized in the House of Commons for its groundbreaking representation.
Beyond the screen, Hannah is deeply committed to mentorship and community impact. She uplifts emerging storytellers through her work with Presenting Our Vision (POV), FEM Script Lab, and Passages Canada, where she proudly shares stories of her Eritrean heritage.
